The computer should be able to find the TC by IP even when it fails by name. although AFP causes me less fuss usually. With High Sierra SMB is probably best to use. With the IP address, use top menu in Finder, Go, Connect to server. Click the TC icon and it will show the address in the summary. Try opening the TC disk by using its IP directly.įind the IP address using Airport Utility. Apple never intended it to be used as a NAS. There is a big difference between the normal hard drive and a TC which is a network drive.Īlso the TC is not really safe place to store files. I was manually copying important files to my time capsule using it as a normal hard drive. Here I am assuming that you do not have the "original" files on another hard drive, or a back up of the Time Capsule drive, otherwise you would have used the other copies or versions of the files by now. Please be advised that this is very expensive process if you decide to try this route. In either case, it is possible to open up the Time Capsule and pull the hard drive and then take it to a data restoration specialist to see if they can rescue the data on the drive. If the reset does not help, unfortunately the drive is either defective or the files on the drive have become corrupted and are no longer useable in their present state. The reset will not affect any of the data on the Time Capsule hard drive. ![]() The question is how to get to it and/or whether the drive is actually functioning.Īt this point, all that I can suggest is that you perform a factory default reset on the Time Capsule and then set it up again to see if that will allow access to the data on the drive. 6 TB or 1.6 TB of data on the Time Capsule. Since 1.4 TB is free space, there is either. Depending on your Time Capsule's hard drive total capacity, it is likely either a 2 TB or 3 TB. The drive in the screenshot just above shows that there is 1.4 TB of free data on the Time Capsule drive. ![]() If you are super heavy DIYer post again as I have finally beaten the thing into submission. It shows as though it is empty, no files at all. So replacing fan and power supply might be both required. The power supply thermostat seems to be particularly bad. Note I have also found sensor problems so this can be caused by multiple issues. but will render a Time Capsule a paper weight if you actually want to do Time Machine backups. There is a strange solution in the above thread. Re: why is my airport extreme overheating? You can see from previous posts this is not unusual. as it will happen again in a similar period of time. Unfortunately the cost of repair professionally often leaves you seriously questioning the value of the original purchase. I would check with a repair shop for quote. but the TC does require more care as the hard disk must be removed as well. The Time Capsule teardown is based on the Extreme. There are instructions for removing the fan over at ifixit although the rules are complicated so ask your Apple store. However if you have valid applecare on product, computer, ipad or appleTV it also covers the TC. ![]() it should be 57 in normal operation but can go up to 255.Īpple offer no repairs or replacements. If you open the airport utility and go to the diagnostics it will show you the current duty cycle. As your ambient temperature goes up the fan will need to work harder. obviously the fan becomes less efficient. (the picture makes it seem worse than it really is). Here is a fan after a couple of years of service.Īlthough the fan still works. This was a new replacement fan after a few months of use. he tried cleaning and lubricating them but found the fans just failed again in a few months. Talking recently to another Technician he has replaced a few of these fans. You are right on schedule for the clogged fan syndrome which Bob mentioned. ![]() It is the "tower" style, 2TB Time Capsule, purchased in January, 2017.
